Shortening instead of er?

I saw this recipe for Giant Ginger Cookies and it said that if I wanted the cookies to be chewy I should substitute the er with shortening. The thing is my shortening is not from Crisco so I'm kind of scared to use it...Can I do 1/2 er and 1/2 shortening? Will the cookies still be chewy? Thanks!!
